Happy May!
This month we are going to be doing some exciting activities at school, and we want you to be a part of the fun! This month’s theme is MOTHERS, FAMILY, AND RELATIONSHIPS, so your child will be hearing new stories about moms and their children, caring, how to strengthen family relationships and more. Through a variety of classroom activities, your child will learn about what kinds of jobs moms do, how children can honor their mothers, and why the relationship between mother and child is important.
You can extend the learning at home with a few simple and fun activities. Check out these PARENT IDEAS for some ways you can engage with your child at home. Make it fun!
Drawings with Mom: Take time to be creative with your child. Play a simple partner drawing game. You will need two pieces of paper. Choose a color and have your child choose a different color. Each of you should make a scribble on your paper. Then switch papers. Turn the scribble into a picture or design by adding lines and shapes. What will your drawings become? The sillier the better!
Hide and Seek: In Runaway Bunny, the little bunny tried to run away from his mother, but she kept finding him. Play a game of hide and seek with your child. Or, hide stuffed toys or pennies for your child to find!
Baby Animals: Take a nature walk, visit a local animal shelter, farm, or nature center. Look for baby animals. Remind children that many animals are born in springtime (like the baby bird in Are You My Mother?). Record the animals you see. How many babies are there? Do the babies look like the mother? How are they the same and different?
Bake with Mom: Some moms like to bake or cook. Have your child help you choose a new recipe and try it out with your child. Make sugar cookies with springtime shapes like ducks, birds, or rabbits. Don’t like to bake? Take a shortcut and buy premixed cookie dough. Roll out and use cookie cutters.
Mom and Me Garden: In the Runaway Bunny, the little bunny hid in the garden. Remind your child that new flowers grow in spring. Plant some wildflowers or a tree in your yard. Keep track of the days until your seeds grow. Decorate (paint) a special Mom and Me stone to put in the garden.
Special Day: Plan a special day out with each child. Choose a location, day, and time and put it on the calendar. You might go to lunch, the playground, shopping, or to a movie. Give each child a chance for some one-on-one time with mom.
