Literacy First™ August Parent Ideas
Dear Parents,
Happy AUGUST!
This month we are going to be doing some exciting activities at school, and we want you to be a part of the fun! This month’s theme is TRANSPORTATION, TRAVEL and THINGS THAT MOVE, so your child will be hearing new stories about cars, buses, trucks, planes, boats, and so much more. Through a variety of classroom activities, your child will learn about relationships, August, summer, letters, numbers, and awareness of self and the world around.
You can extend the learning at home with a few simple and fun activities. Check out the PARENT IDEAS for some ways you can engage with your child at home. Make it fun! Let’s have a great month – together!
Recycle and Build a Train: Collect various boxes, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, containers and other items from around your home. Clean them, offer your child craft materials like ribbon, string, paint, construction paper or tin foil. Encourage your child to create and build a mode of transportation with the materials. What could they become? A car, a truck, a boat, a plane, or some crazy-new mixed-up vehicle?
Boats Float: Make a simple boat with a piece of aluminum foil. Fold, squish, and mold the foil to make the boat bottom. Add a toothpick and a small flag. See if it floats!
What Do Trucks Do? Visit a local construction site and watch the workers. What is the important job of each worker? Do you see men and women workers? Do you see workers of different races? What are they doing or building? Which trucks do you see? What are the names of the trucks? Ask a worker to find out or go to the library and do some research.
Ride It: Have fun with bikes, scooters, wagons, and riding toys. Hook them together with rope to make a “train”. Have a pretend play carwash and invite the neighbor children to come and get their bikes washed. Draw sidewalk chalk roads on the cement and ride the path. Take your child to a different park and explore the paths that are made for traveling!
Cars and Trucks in the Yard: Purchase a few toy cars (Dollar Stores or Thrift stores have inexpensive collections!) and set up a corner of your yard for a construction garden. Make roads in the dirt, hills, parking lines with sidewalk chalk, or a covered garage with sticks and leaves. What else could you make for cars and trucks? Don’t forget a gas station and a carwash.
